One Day at a Time

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, so that I may test them, whether or not they will walk in My instruction.

Exodus 16:4

Just take one day at a time.  This sentence is often spoken to give hope and wise counsel to someone facing overwhelming odds that often feels like more than they can bear. Someone who has just lost a loved one, struggling with financial pressure, received a diagnosis, facing unemployment, and more.   Someone eager to hurry the process of healing, growth, or change and move on from the discomfort they’re experiencing.

In our eagerness to avoid the present’s pain and discomfort, these words remind us of its importance and purpose.  The bricks that are laid today become the foundation from which we build tomorrow.  If our only focus is moving on from where we are, we’ll miss the vital building block we need to support the next season we’re heading into.

This was a principle the Israelites had to learn.  The Lord told them to collect only what they need for today, just take one day at a time.  In this, He was testing if they would obey what He said and trust Him.  He also demonstrated His faithfulness, nature, and active involvement in their everyday lives.  Every day manna appeared was a declaration that they could trust and depend on Him, and friend, you can do the same.

Just as the Israelites were given manna, we’ve been given His present presence, the Holy Spirit, who daily leads us through the process of healing, growth, and change.   Whether it’s growing spiritually or healing emotionally, here are a few things that we’re instructed to do daily to move us from where we are to where He wants us to be.

But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided to you.  “So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Matthew 6:33-34

Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears our burden, the God who is our salvation. Selah.

Psalm 68:19

Blessed be the man who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at my doorposts.

Proverbs 8:34

And He was saying to them all, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.”

Luke 9:23

He read from the book of the law of God daily…

Nehemiah 8:18

Evening, morning and noon I cry out in distress, and he hears my voice.

Psalm 55:17

PAUSE – PRAY – PROGRESS

  • How did you experience the Lord’s provision today?
  • How much and how often do you trust and depend on the Lord? Does it come easily for you or is it difficult to do and why?
  • How can you live each day to the full?  What are the things you need to start doing and stop doing?
